The thought of college might seem scary to many students and families, and with an increase of Hispanic and Latinx students, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the University of Arizona is aware that we need to make college more attainable for this population. We know that language can be a barrier when thinking about higher education, therefore, we have created environments where students and their families/supporters have access to valuable information in their primary language. By doing so, students and their support systems feel welcomed and become more familiar with Arizona, eventually calling it home. We welcome you to learn more about how we as professionals can challenge ourselves and institutional leadership in creating initiatives that support this important population and community.

Cultural Competency is the explicit intention to serve students from a variety of different cultures and ethnic groups. This session will identify the current gaps in practice in higher learning institutions and provide holistic resources to further serve students and the communities at large. There will be multiple mixed methods discussed such as Critical Race Theory and a variety of equity centered models. From the words of Rick Riordan, “Fairness does not mean everyone gets the same. Fairness means everyone gets what they need to succeed”.
