The AZ HSI Consortium is pleased to announce the Momentum in Leadership: Blue Chip Men of Color Initiative as an inaugural AZ HSI G.A.T.E. Funding Opportunities Awardee. After careful review from colleagues across the state of AZ, Momentum in Leadership: Blue Chip Men of Color Initiative was shown to be an effective program in identifying barriers to and within higher education for Latinx learners, engaging in institutional problem solving, and implementing solutions that support Latinx learner success while successfully documenting how change at their Arizona HSI was implemented.

Project Abstract:
Momentum in Leadership: Blue Chip Men of Color Initiative seeks to continue to address the critical gap in retention and engagement for men of color at the University of Arizona through continued support for leadership opportunities. This initiative recognizes the challenges faced by these students, particularly in their sophomore year, where the highest attrition occurs. This funding will encourage active participation among students that identify as men of color, support retention for men of color, and support the planning of a statewide men of color summit.
The significance of the statewide men of color summit lies in its potential to create a community of practice with shared knowledge of high impact practices and a greater sense of empowerment.
Blue Chip has demonstrated remarkable success, with retention rates for men of color, demonstrating a retention rate of 85% for fall 2024. By investing in their leadership journey, we aim not only to improve their academic persistence but also to empower them for future career success. This initiative aligns with the broader goals of the Arizona HSI consortium by guiding students beyond just access, but providing meaningful, supportive opportunities for continued success.
